As for fears about genetics that have no scientific basis...

The problem isn't one of language, but of a few well-funded political action groups -- who really don't care what science says -- but do care whether they get continue to get funding (like Greenpeace). A little while back they tried to run "bad science" stories in the US on ABC news, but it didn't work.

But I do think America is a bit ahead of other countries in scientific literacy, even though we do have our share of "armchair scientists" in the form of well-intended, but misinformed, housewive types.
