There's no doubt the whole situation was mishandled. Even before the collision they ignored iceberg warnings and kept up speed. One report is they were trying to beat a previous transatlantic crossing record on their maiden voyage. Another rumor was that they had a fire in one of the coal storage bins and needed to get into dock fast so they could deal with that. There was a ship who had the Titanic in site that had stopped for the night because of the ice. They ignored the signal flares and did not come to help, but steamed away in the morning. They could have saved everybody.
