dell...on the leading edge... true, dell a "boxmaker", nothing proprietary such as msft, intc, csco.....but when i view a company in the marketplace, i see dell as establishing a non-western mindset business model of just-in time production...something not done in the industry on such a large scale...they are ahead of the group..they have the ability with six day inventory to react quickly to market requirements...to meet the challenge of what andrew grove refers to as a strategic inflection point.. take the concept out of tech, and apply it to any industry...a major change in manufacturing philosophy propels that company to the fore front and keeps them there for quite a while....ala henry ford and the production line... dell has established manufacturing facility in china, a bold move considering the asian economic outlook...but dell understands that to do business in such a large market they must have a in country presence...much harder than opening up facilities in s'pore or malaysia to feed the market.... dell talking of entering the low end market...perhaps late? or perhaps with a plan...they weren't forced as cpq, ibm, hwp,to drop prices and make sacrifices on what used to be high end machines...they will enter with a specific designed product.. leading edge is maintained by management...the likes of michael dell, eckerd pfieffer, andrew grove, bill gates...all visionaries in their own right....not afraid to pull the trigger when the world around claims there is naught to shoot at! re:intc market share fallling..consider the fact that all the competition combined, can't match intc production capability..this makes it a gorilla..
