The company has appointed the Honourable Donald S. Macdonald, P.C., C.C.,
to the board of directors.
Mr. Macdonald was a member of Parliament between 1962 and 1978 and a
member of the cabinet of Prime Minister Pierre E. Trudeau from 1968 to 1977.
Mr. Macdonald held, in succession, the portfolios of president of the Privy
Council, Minister of National Defence, Minister of Energy, Mines & Resources
and Minister of Finance.
From 1978 to 1988, Mr. Macdonald was a partner in the law firm McCarthy &
McCarthy, in Toronto. During that period he served as chairman of the Royal
Commission on the economic union and development prospects for Canada, also
known as the Macdonald Commission. Between 1988 and 1991 he was High
Commissioner for Canada to Britain. In 1995/96 he served as chairman of the
advisory committee on competition in Ontario's electricity system.
Mr. Macdonald is chairman of Siemens Canada, chairman of Celanese Canada
Inc., and chairman of the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships. He is
also a director of a number of other commercial corporations in Canada and the
U.S. He is a member of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada and a Companion
of the Order of Canada.
The company's principal asset is a 40 per cent interest in the Diavik Diamonds
project at Lac de Gras, 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife, NWT. The
remaining 60 per cent is owned by Diavik Diamond Mines Inc., a subsidiary of
Rio Tinto plc of London, England. The project is in the feasibility study stage.
Diamond production is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2002, subject
to a favourable feasibility study, the receipt of government approval and permits,
and a construction decision by the joint venture partners. The company retains the
right to market its 40 per cent share of diamond production.
