Action Performance may hit wall -Barron's

NEW YORK, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Action Performance Companies Inc. (Nasdaq:ACTN - news), which markets models cars, caps and clothes to auto-racing fans, has set a lightning pace in recent years but its growth may be encountering speed bumps or could even hit a wall, financial weekly Barron's reported Sunday.

The Phoenix-based company has seen its Nasdaq-listed shares race from a split-adjusted 2 in early 1996 to a late January peak of of 48.

Both sales and earnings have zoomed ahead as the company carried out 14 acquisitions and the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing, or Nascar as it is commonly known, became the fastest growing spectator sport in the United States.

But signs Nascar's growth in popularity is levelling off, combined with intense competition from rivals like Mattel Inc. (NYSE:MAT - news), are factors that could hurt Action Performance's growth, Barron's Up & Down Wall Street column reported..."
