Good call, Maurice.

I fear that without voice traffic (billable minutes) any 3G network is going to have a tough time recouping the investment. PDA's don't need 1mb/sec and a sizeable mobile data demand (laptop PC's) hasn't appeared yet. Voice traffic wasn't mentioned in the press release.

But, CDMAOne HDR symmetrical data performance at 1.8Mb/sec is better than Cablemodems, DS1, ADSL, and ISDN. Cablemodems and ADSL exceed 1.8Mb/sec in the forward link only (under ideal conditions). Not something you want to hang a web server off of.

DS1 (fractional T1 service) offers symmetrical 1.544Mb/sec from your LEC. In California, T1 connections to the Internet start at $750 a month plus the line charges from the phone company.

Tero, until US West comes to my part of California, your countrymen could end up with faster internet access than I have.

As for roaming, Americans are no stranger to useless GSM phones flashing "NO NETWORK." In the early days of PCS services in the US, roaming was a big problem with single-mode handsets. But, PCS-CDMA has broken growth records. Give the Finn's a competitive price plan, reliable service, decent coverage, and include Nokia's CDMAOne phones in the lineup.

Stranger things have happened.

Will the attraction be the reliable and cheaper voice service, or high speed internet service? This will be interesting to watch.
