Here is an interesting thought:

Voodoo 3- more of the same, just faster than voodoo2 with some extra enhancements. Competitors have new innovative features.

Pentium 3- more of the same, just faster than pentium 2 with some extra enhancements. Competitors will have new innovative features (K7- faster bus, larger cashe, etc)

So. Do we have Intel-like clout in the graphics sector? Nope. Hope we can make it work...

For what its worth, I am really hoping P3 flops. The 3 is about as meaningless as the Voodoo's 3, or the 98 in Win98...of course I don't want it to flop just because of that (hey, I love our 3 now)...I just don't care for Intel :) At what point does the exponential curve of Moores law result in diminishing returns? With the current state of software apps, I'd say soon; at least a breather until software catches up. Don't know why 98% of the buying community would want to pay a premium so out of line for the marginal performance gains...Low margin Celerons for all!

Re: IBM & Riva 128ZX

Pat, it is a technology issue; the press release itself said they were choosing it because of its "state of the art" graphics. LOL! Keep in mind my opinion is that only an uninformed consumer would purchase an IBM home PC at retail prices. Overpriced, under-featured, too proprietary (like Sony and others). Uh, but please don't tell my employer I said this!
