I think we are all being unfair to Intel on this one.

I am sure that they quite innocently thought it was a good idea.

And another way to differentiate it from AMD/Cyrix guys.

Also a sexy tie-in into the e-commerce madness.

Fortunately it seems to have back-fired on them.

I think they are just sitting on thir hands, whistling Dixie and seeing if the problem will go away. It won't.
Intel probably used the ID thing to sell software makers on developing apps that use KNI...Now they have serious egg on their face and something else discoloring their pants.
