Re Japan:

I think that MA's stuff covers this pretty well. Basically, we have lots of "liabilities" that are no longer properly collateralized. Since most of these are "guaranteed" by the government, at some point they will probably have to print money in one form or another to cover it.

Please see the latest article at the Ray Man table at the Cafe.

I read yesterday (at the Cafe) that 90% of the bonds to be issued this year will be issued in Japan....haven't confirmed the figure, but it sounds bad.

"We can't handle any more cheap goods flooding us out over here! "

Is it such a bad deal? The Japanese work their asses off to make world class products.....they US gets the products, and the Japanese get paper that is of debateable value.

On the other hand, the US is losing it's manufacturing capability.

I guess you're wondering how we could let Japan go down the tubes? I don't know if it will go "down the tubes"......but if the debt problem is as bad as you hear (rumors have been around Japan for a while), then perhaps we will get:

*Big time inflation
*A cheap yen

I have not looked at MA's theories closely, but his statements about the banks, the gov't use of the post office savings etc. all ring true to me.

Despite the recession, I am still busy as can be........lucky I guess.

Why is Japan headed for a "debt explosion" when they are getting their plays from the Rubin/Greenspan/Seidman play book?....

Well I certainly don't see where the Japanese banker/politicians have been listening. Do you really believe we have the power to "tell" the Japanese what to do??

Someone is holding the aces and 8s...and somehow, I just don't think it is the ordinary Japanese, thrifty, respectful, community minded masses. Somehow, consumerism hasn't polluted your people like it has corrupted us from inside out...

Actually, the Japanese people do hold the aces. They have the savings that would reinvigorate the economy through consumer demand. And their reluctance to spend, but rather preserve what wealth they have, and ultimately the votes they cast, allow them to determine what trump will be.

They just have to excersize their power.

Btw, the Japanese were very big consumers during the good times. The problem was that they just consumed their own domestically produced, overpriced goods.

Had the Japanese been taking their plays from the US, they would have dropped trade restrictions against foreign products years ago, and adopted a profit oriented, not market share oriented, economy.

Ron
