I have read the piece. The problem is that an analytical piece like that often masks an editorializing tendency on the part of the author. He mentions that there are Republicans with different views, and quotes one, but then skates away from the conflict and continues to be a mouthpiece for those whose views he wants to get across.
I have met Tony Fabrizio, and he seems a good fellow. But he is habitually worried about ideological rigidity, and may be over- reacting to current events. Luntz, who believes in sharpening differences, helped to shape the "Contract with America", which aided the Republicans in taking the Congress, so he may have something. Kristol is being quoted to buttress views he doesn't especially hold, which makes me suspicious of the whole article. Kristol thinks that the party should be bolder in stating its commitment to conservative values. Still, it's an interesting piece...
