*OneTel in Australia* Mika, I got a [mostly illegible] fax of a news item in Australia. The new network is, according to the news report, going to be GSM. The existing service they sell is GSM. The stock price of OneTel went up times four in the past couple of months according to the news report.

So much for cdmaOne and OneTel if that is correct. The shareholders might get a fright when they find out how much competition there is going to be in cellular services. They are pricing some telecom stocks as though there is an eternal monopoly.

The Australian monopoly/oligopoly is already on the way out.

Since this OneTel network is totally new and not an expansion of an existing network, it is a bit surprising that it is GSM. They must have believed the line of bull that they'll get an upgrade to VW40 when it comes in shortly. Sure they will, but it will cost them many dinero.

MEDIA GIANTS JOIN FORCES WITH ONE.TEL TO BUILD NEXT GENERATION MOBILE NETWORK
Monday, 15 February 1999

Global telecommunications company One.Tel today announced a strategic alliance with two of the world's leading media groups, News Limited and Publishing and Broadcasting Limited (PBL). In this landmark agreement the two companies have each agreed to acquire shares and options to take their investment to approximately 20% each of One.Tel (fully diluted).

The terms of the deal include the issuing of shares and options. The initial injection will be $429 million. A significant proportion of these funds will be allocated to build out a next generation 1800MHz GSM mobile network. This launches One.Tel's bid to become a major mobile network operator.

One.Tel will commence the rollout of a GSM network in Australia in the next quarter.

They are buying a new GSM network, not expanding an old one. How many new GSM networks have been ordered in the past 4 months do you know? Anyone looking for something to short might have found it. Telstra has a big cash flow. There are cdmaOne networks popping up all around them with an evolutionary advantage to Qualcomm's HDR cellular services, cdma2000 and WWeb.
