Well, in principle, I support free trade. I even support taking chances with it, I supported NAFTA. But some of the Asian countries scare me. Their trickle down is a very very slow trickle. They need a native Henry Ford to convince them that workers who have enough money to consume are a good thing for the company, for the economy, and for their country.

I endorse free trade. Japan does not. As Z states it's a two way street. To understand Japan's Weltpolitik one must have basic knowledge of their history and culture, both of which are truly unique.

I am often amused at the hand wringing and chagrin expressed in the west when Japan's economic policies revert to form. They remain obdurate and intractable. It's part of who they are.

Free trade or protectionism? It is not a completely black or white issue. There are exceptions to every rule. Unfortunately, the gray areas are predominant.

Lawrence,

I come back from vacation and find that an amusing little discussion has been taking place about free-trade. What's next Communism vs. Capitalism? Or perhaps fluoride in the drinking water? How did you get drawn into a discussion on a question which history has repeatedly answered? At least the phrase “giant sucking sound” hasn't been thrown out. <g> Globaphobia indeed!
