Lynn,
I'm digging back in time for this information and combing it with some personal knowledge. I did forget where I put my orange juice glass this morning, so it may be one of my better days. Forgive any slight mistakes in actual names of institutions.

The dividend qualifies Compaq for dividend required equity investments by funds such as retirement funds. This is a very large area of professional investors often overlooked by capital markets. Think about the Washington State Employee Pension Fund, or The California State Employee Pension Fund. Funds like these have also be a great source of money for KKR the great LBO company. Probably better known because of the TV movie "Barbarians At The Gate." It covered their stormy buy out of R.J. Reynolds.

I think European retirement funds such as these have set investment guidelines or rules about buying only equities that pay a dividend. This is a huge pool of investors as I understand it. Perhaps victor could lend us his knowledge on the topic. My first hand knowledge of that part of the world is limited to Irish golf courses and briefly working for a German owned company in the US.<g>
