BancBoston Robertson Stephens Reiterates Market Performer Rating, Urges Caution on Dell Computer

February 17, 1999 09:57 AM
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is being issued by BancBoston Robertson Stephens, a member of the National Association of Securities Dealers, CRD number 41271:
BancBoston Robertson Stephens managing director and senior hardware analyst Daniel T. Niles today maintained his Market Performer rating on Dell Computer DELL , urging near-term caution as the company reported results below expectations. Dell is a leader in the direct marketing of PCs.

"Dell reported results in line with our First Call on Friday, below expectations. Going forward, we maintain our near-term caution, as investors come to grips with the true growth rate of Dell in a more competitive PC market environment," said Niles.

"The miss in revenues in the current quarter follows the in-line results reported last quarter, with year-to-year revenue growth slowing from 54 percent just six months ago to 38 percent today," said Niles. "The Americas saw sequential revenue growth of only 3 percent, as corporate was below expectations, but with the consumer business doing well. The question now is the trade-off in revenues versus margins needed to maintain earnings momentum."
