Dell speaking of growth:-

'..... I think we have the opportunity to do that, which would be significantly faster than the market. It's up to us to make sure we execute and have the right products, the right services," he said.

"But we don't know of any reason standing in our way of doing that, other than the execution."

Mother lode

A bright spot in Dell's revenue picture was the 76 percent spike in sales of servers, according to IDC. Servers are powerful computers that support a range of vital tasks such bank-machine transactions, Internet service and e-mail and stock-market trading. They also link large and dispersed networks of desktop PCs, referred to as "clients," in corporations and government agencies.

Servers carry higher prices and significantly fatter profit margins than desktop computers.

"These guys are poised to take market share in the server space," said Mazzucchelli of Gerard Klauer Mattison. "They have a full solution now that can go head-to-head with Compaq." .....

Dell said servers and workstations accounted for 14 percent of revenue in the fourth quarter compared with 11 percent a year ago.
