Whatever you want to say ... why is DELL down today ?
If they kick *** ,why is not DELL performing in the market
today ?
When MF and institution have finished unloading their DELL,
expect a lot more downgrade in the coming weeks.
Today is just the beginning of the DELL 's demise.
Next 2 quarters will be worse.

Mohan,

Excellent synopsis!

The question is not that the model is intact, but where will it be in a couple of quarters.

The competitive environment, the technology changes, world and US economy, and indeed personnel changes will all effect reactions from DELL. If they have their share of visionaries on staff, they will find "profitable" markets in which to grow... and not necessarily limited to Computers. A company which departs widely from a core competency, though, may suffer an impact, at least initially, on profitability.

Application of an Internet Direct Sale Model can, IMO, become a core competency in itself. Direct Sale Computers certainly can be a good base to start from, especially for Dell, which has a marvelous "Customer Service" ethic firmly entrenched in its people.

Thanks for your great post.

everything you said in your synopsis is true but Dell missed the revenues number. As Cramer said Revenues dont lie. Dell can no longer be valued as a stock that always beats the consensus number and can not be valued as a hyper growth stock now. When the new multiple is determinded and the stock stablizies then I will reenter with new money. It is the best run company I know of. Maybe the future is 30% growth at best but that's not too bad I must say.

Mohan, you inadvertently omitted one other salient point:

Dell's daily internet sales of $14M is greater than the ANNUAL revenue of most internet companies.

Best regards,

Mohan: SG Cowen's new Internet Capitalist Report (dated 2/19/99) has some passages that may clearly apply to DELL's situation going forward:

<<* The Internet is an entirely new medium
that is fundamentally different (it is
transactive) than other media and with
growth characteristics that are without
precedent

* Increasing returns drives these companies'
success or failure, that positive feedback
loops and quasi-monopolies are natural
and that it is a winner-take-all medium
where first mover advantage is key and
great execution a pre-requisite.

* Internet companies' business models scale
fantastically, with lower variable costs and
Web-server-scaleable revenues

* Online relationships are ultimately what
drive shareholder value and that breadth of
influence (reach) is as important as depth
of influence (usage)

* Not all Internet valuations are unjustified;
the size of market opportunities, the power
of increasing returns, great management
teams, and great proven execution deserve
premium valuations >>

Hmmmm......I think we know of a few stocks that may deserve "premium valuations." I would put DELL at the top of the list .

Have a good weekend.

Regards,

Scott
