Yes, Alan - that was my point. Many industries and technologies gravitate over time to a specialized niche market (whether large or small), rather than become completely obsolete.

Incidentally, with regard to volatile vs non-volatile memory technologies - FDRAM does appear to have the potential to make a significant impact on current electromechanical, non-volatile mass storage devices, don't you think?

Also, some years ago, I heard of an optical-holographic mass storage invention which purported to be capable of storing gigabytes of data in a one inch cube.
