Sun, I'm glad I'm not the only one who is bothered by this Carmack deal. I really don't find it appropriate at all. The game developers should be independent. Your point about 3Dfx sharing their roadmap with ID is very valid. How can they feel safe doing so?

In other news...3Dfx announced that the V3 is optimized for the P3...http://investor.msn.com/news/pressrel.asp?Symbol=tdfx

Sun,

3Dfx has said that Rampage will be in Q3 '99

Rampage will ship (not be announced) in Q3-1999. (Agreed?)

When will Rampage be announced??? If TDFX announces a 'wonderful' product like Rampage late-Q2, the extra publicity could curb sales of competitor's products and even encourage sales of V3.

Instead, TDFX is going to delivery V3 3500 mid-Q2. Consequently, TDFX will probably not announce Rampage until early-Q3. The competitors and the press are going to focus on the weaknesses of V3 all summer long.

John Carmack is on the board of nVidia

This is trouble, I agree. id Software has the most to lose.

Joel

PS - What are your thoughts about the timeframe for making a new investment in TDFX?

Just checked nVidia's corporate web site and Carmack is not listed on their board. The board members are:

Board of Directors
Jen-Hsun Huang - Founder, President and CEO
Tench Coxe - Partner, Sutter Hill Ventures
James Gaither - Partner, Cooley Godward LLP
Harvey Jones - Chairman, Synopsys, Inc.
Bill Miller - CEO, Avid
Brooke Seawell - Executive Vice President, Net Dynamics
Mark Stevens - Partner, Sequoia Capital

Sure hope this is correct and Carmack isn't on their board....

David
