Dell 4th-Qtr European Sales Rise 40%, Highest Among Regions

London, Feb. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Dell Computer Corp. said an increase in the number of computers it sold through the Internet helped fourth-quarter sales in Europe increase 40 percent, the highest for any world region.

The company, based in the Austin, Texas suburb of Round Rock, said sales growth in Europe beat the 39 percent achieved in the Americas and the 30 percent increase in Asia. Europe contributed $1.4 billion, or 27 percent of total sales. It sold computers worth $3 million each day in Europe using its Web site, almost a quarter of its worldwide Internet-based sales.

The world's No. 1 direct-seller of personal computers is trying to boost its market share in Europe, the world's fastest growing PC market in 1998. According to market research company Dataquest Inc., while Dell's market share in Europe grew by 1.8 percentage points to 7.3 percent, it was less than half that of market leader Compaq Computer Corp. ''We still have more than 90 percent of the market to go after,'' said Jan Gesmar-Larsen, president of Dell for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
