In 1993, Michael Parekh approached the research director at Goldman, Sachs about starting coverage of the Internet. The director's first question was to the point: "How many companies are there in the Internet universe?" Mr. Parekh answered, "One — well, one and a half — America Online Inc. (AOL) and Compuserve Corp., which is a part of H&R Block." But he was sure that the trends were there, and that many more companies would be coming. And so he became the official Internet/Online services analyst for Goldman,Sachs — the first on the sell side.
