CSC INFOSEC Unit Achieves Coveted Systems Security Engineering Capability Maturity Model Rating

FALLS CHURCH, Va., Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- An information security assessment organization of Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE: CSC - news) has become the first worldwide business organization to attain an independent, third party, level 3 appraisal against the Systems Security Engineering Capability Maturity Model (SSE-CMM). The announcement about CSC's Information Assurance Solutions Operations organization was made by Thomas C. Robinson, president, CSC's Defense Group based here.

''CSC achieved a level 3, third party SSE-CMM rating profile in nine specific areas which measure an organization's capability to perform information security assessment functions,'' said Ronald B. Knode, an operations director with CSC. ''This achievement is singularly important as CSC is now performing information security assessments for government organizations and commercial entities in accordance with the Critical Infrastructure Assurance Office's endorsed National Security Agency (NSA) methodology.''

SSE-CMM is a joint government-industry initiative to identify security engineering ''best practices'' and a way to measure their use as an indicator of an organization's ability to perform effective and reliable system security engineering. System security engineering involves the application of engineering and analytical disciplines to match information protection tools and processes to satisfy security needs.

The SSE-CMM process areas, for example, measure key security disciplines, such as security requirements identification, risk and threat assessment, and the coordination of protection techniques.

''Recognized SSE-CMM standards will allow industry to better satisfy the security needs of both government and commercial organizations,'' explained Mary D. Schanken of the National Security Agency (NSA). ''Through repeatable and predictable SSE-CMM processes and practices, industry is better able to reduce information risks and deal with risk associated with performance, cost and schedule. As a result, government can select better-qualified bidders to deliver superior information security engineering services.''

CSC has been providing information security and related skills to the federal government for more than 15 years. The company currently provides information security engineering support to government and commercial enterprises from security engineering centers in Herndon, Falls Church and Norfolk, Va.; Hanover, Md.; San Antonio, Texas; Omaha, Neb.; and Colorado Springs, Colo.

Computer Sciences Corporation helps clients in industry and government use information technology to achieve strategic and operational objectives. The company develops individual business solutions that are delivered by CSC's 49,000 employees in more than 700 offices worldwide in areas such as management and information technology consulting, systems consulting and integration, operations support and information services outsourcing.

Since its formation in 1959, CSC has been known for its flexibility in its relationships with clients. The company maintains numerous agreements with hardware or software technology companies and thus is able to identify and manage solutions specifically tailored to each client's needs.
