Here's a reply to the paging article, sent to me privately by someone who appears to have more information than the author (and posted with his permission). Make up your own minds:

Regards,

"I think the author of that article is just short or lazy in not wanting to update his location every few days. In addition, and VERY IMPORTANTLY, in combination with the phone, you never have to update your location. The system knows where you are within ten kilometers. Just power up the phone and you are done. Land in Tokyo, wala, you are updated. No hassle. And paging was created for the phone user, not really for the stand alone penny pinching cheapo.

This short also complains about missing a page and calling back. Hello you fool. This is the device that lets people contact you very reliably anywhere on the planet, including Botswana or the South Pole, for free. No variable cost. On the plane, no problem. This guy is a complaining short."

Only a fool tries to connect thru a sat link inside of a Mall when he could use a cellphone link instead.

Taking a product and using it in a way that it isn't intended and then complaining that it doesn't work is funny.

Maybe I should go buy a Globalstar phone and take it scuba diving with me and see if it works underwater.

Or, put another way, Globalstar phones rely on the local cellular network as well.

Same with the paging. You either need global paging service, or you don't. If you don't need it, compalaining that it costs too much for your once a year vacation to vermont is stupid- you aren't the target customer.
