Silicon Automation Systems(SAS)announces Synapse HostGlite for the Intel Pentium III Processor FYI February 18, 1999 -- The world's first host-based software G.lite solution, SAS' Synapse HostGlite, is now available for the Intel Pentium III processor. Synapse HostGlite was unveiled today at the Pentium III Processor Preview Day. G.lite is the next generation of modem technology enabling data rates of up to 1.5 Mbps on existing telephone lines, increasing the access rates available to users by more than 30 times. G.lite solutions enable applications such as video-conferencing, movies-on-demand, distance education and faster Internet access. Recent ratification of G.lite by ITU-T has seen a dedicated effort by the industry to develop products which are expected this year. These products provide for a competitive alternative to cable modems. "Combining the faster access trends in the telecom industry and the increasing processor power in the computing industry, Synapse HostGlite is perfectly poised to give the consumer more bits per dollar", says Rajiv Mody, CEO of SAS. Synapse HostGlite is based on SAS' DMT ADSL technology. It uses the Intel Pentium III processor's power for the data pump and link layers. The solution comprises Host software and an add-on card which implements the Analog Front-End. The implementation is fully compliant with the G.lite (G.992.2) recommendation of ITU-T. "SAS has licensed Synapse HostGlite to Ambient Technologies and is working closely with them to bring this novel technology to market", adds Rajiv Mody. Ambient Technologies, as part of its overall strategy on next generation fast Internet access and home networking products, will target the HostGlite for PC users. Ambient, the recently formed company that has purchased Cirrus Logic's Modem Business Unit, has been working with SAS over the last one year to productize this technology. "Ambient is very pleased to work with SAS, and by extension with Intel, to bring this exciting high-speed Internet access product to market" says Fred Schuckert, President and CEO of Ambient. "The combination of Intel's Pentium III processor with HostGlite, augmented with Ambient's superior DSP and analog technology, makes the HostGlite product the ideal Internet access tool for consumers who have been demanding much faster connecting speed without giving up data/fax modem capabilities." The product, named MD8800, is to be introduced later this year. "Intel is pleased to see that SAS' host-based G.lite solution takes advantage of the performance of the Pentium III processor to deliver a compelling real-time multimedia experience on the Internet," Sally Fundakowski, Director of Shopping/Business Market Development, Intel Corp.
