I've found the 'free' UK service to be pretty good.

And if they are going to make money off it, they have to keep that up because otherwise people will just vote with their modems and go elsewhere. There is no lock in at all with so many free services around, so no need to keep a paid one as a backup. And with the possible exception of one or two, there wont be any subscription ISPs in the UK within a year or so. And they will have to differentiate on something other than quality imho. I liked the AOL ads for keeping your children secure from the net and ease of use.
There were some teething problems with the free services in the first few weeks but I;ve found them just as good (=reliable and fast) as the service I paid a years subscription for nearly a year ago (and wont be renewing).

Freeserve are also starting to expand into becoming a full fledged portal, where no doubt they will be able to add revenue from adverts and other services (for example, a share dealing service is rumoured later this year.) Of course, one reason they can do this is people dont know they can change their home page (or dont even imagine that it can be changed). Same as Netscape :-) who were slow to cotton on to this fact.
