William, Having lived in third world countries, US suburbs and Chicago's south side, I would have to say that things are not as they would appear. In many case, inner cities here are known for crime and are really much more dangerous than most third world countries. However, I have always felt safe in low income areas where i knew where I was going. People are not well off and much of the crime is drug related and family oriented - something you can stay clear of if you try. The suburbs can be a different story in my experience. Overall, though, even though the few incidents are politically motivated and get great press coverage, there are few places in the U.S. that are as safe as just about anywhere in the Middle East - with some exeptions such as Beirut during the height of the civil war and Israeli offensive. I wish you luck in your "security investments" but most of all I wish for peace and understanding. --Joe
