Doug,

This trend has been going on for a few months now. It has been all over the news how restricted shares in U.S. Internet companies that IPO'd 1-2 years ago have now recently become "free" to trade. We're talking tens of millions of shares. These "restricted" shares were bought for practically nothing. I don't think the ones that are now selling really care too much about recent losses or the potential gains, they have already made millions, quite literally. The sale of these shares have helped to depress share prices of these stocks (AMZN included).
