More evidence that the internet will be a deflationary influence on our economy. Overall, this makes our economy more competitive and increases our standard of living. But companies that compete against internet retailers or companies successfully using the internet to distribute goods and services will pressure on their profit margins and some may be driven out of business entirely by their internet competitors.

One event to pay attention to over the weekend and next week is news coming out of the G-7 Summit. The Clinton Administration has been raising concern with EU and Japan regarding the U.S. role as importer of last resort. The steel industry has successfully lobbied for restrictions on steel imports and other industries may be motivated to make similar efforts. It would be very positive to see a renewed commitment to free trade come out of this summit, but it is not likely.
It will also be interesting to see how Europe and Japan plan to do to reinvigorate their economies. These economies must embrace reform, flexibility, and technological innovation, or they will act as a drag on the world economy rather than a second and third engine assisting the US. The contrast between the outlook for Japanese economic reform and Canada's aggressive attempts to modernize their economy is quite remarkable.
Show Them The Money
"Japan's shortage of entrepreneurs is a real worry. Big employers are horribly overstaffed. They are now shedding jobs almost as fast as American firms did a decade ago. More young companies are needed to hire these people instead. Yet for over a decade Japan has been losing more companies than it has created.
