Over the past few months, Erie Insurance Group and a host of other carriers have mailed letter to policyholders who carry homeowners insurance, warning that if their domiciles or anything in them suffers damage as a result of the year 2000 problem, the policyholders won't receive any compensation for their losses. Why not? "Our policies ere written before anybody knew about the year 2000 problem and were never meant to cover failures resulting from it," says Erie spokesperson Karen Ahearn, ...

Homeowners, meanwhile could face very real Y2K losses. On New Yea's Day, personal computers, VCRs, electronic thermostats, and coffee makers all might not work if the appliances have internal calendars that keep track of the year. More likely is the possible crash of home burglar and fire alarm systems, especially those attached to central monitoring stations. But if a fire occurs because your sprinkler system fails, or if pipes burst because of a Y2K heating system malfunction, ….
