Rob--what did go up then? Techs, right? But that was then and this is now. Rumor has it that the Japanese wanted to buy a pile of gold and big Al said 'back off' cause LTCM and half of Rubin's friends were so far short gold that the international financial system would collapse if they got pushy with their buying. "Give us time" he said -- now Rubin will say -- hey, we don't want your crummy steel and all the rest -- reform, reform -- and the Japanese -- maybe they will find the perfect way to yank his chain -- buy a little gold and see what happens to all those smart Americans and their bubbled-up hedge funds. Maybe ask Rubin to say he is sorry by doing them some more favors.
