Here's a quick read on the Microtek/Zip scanner:

Skip the PC on Your Next Scan Job

February 16, 1999

If you've been holding out on buying a scanner because you think they're too complicated, you'd better find another excuse. Microtek's ImageDeck is as easy to set up as a toaster.

Just plug in the power cord and start scanning. You'll find no SCSI card hassles, no conflicts, no cables--you don't even need a PC. You save images and text straight to its built-in floppy or Zip drive.

The ImageDeck is a bit bigger than a regular scanner, and its controls are similar to a copy machine's--clear and easy to use.

The only drawback is that you can't preview your digital copies, but the ImageDeck's automatic settings make getting quality scans almost foolproof. You can set the resolution, amount of compression, and type of image you're scanning. At its top settings, the ImageDeck delivers 36-bit, 600-dpi scans, which is just fine for adding images into presentations or scanning text.

Microtek ImageDeck

RATING: Four Stars

VERDICT: Get quick-and-dirty scans onto a floppy or Zip disk--no PC required.

PROS: One-button easy.

CONS: No way to preview scans.
