Shorting on E-Trade

My question is when do you know when you can short a stock on E-trade? A few days ago, I sold much more of a particular stock than I bought to see if E-trade would let me short it. Well, they let me do it and I've made a pretty penny on it. Do I consider this valid? I never asked them for credit, yet they seem to have given me credit for the short. Any feedback? Thanks!
