My free-association concept of heroic acts is typically about the ones that do not have a lot of time for thought. Like jumping in after a drowning child. Those are more often than not the products of regular people. Heroic acts that need a plan, outside of a wartime or crisis situation, suggest a questionable sort of risk-seeking behavior. I don't think of such automatically.
