I don't think Dell needs to jump ship to offer a Sub-$1000. Intel will gladly sell them a Celeron, cheap.
The ramifications of Dell going sub 1000 cut much deeper however. Especially if Dells fortunes predict Intels fortunes. The cracks in Intels segmentation strategy are beginning to show.

""Dell Weighs Strategy of Offering Computers Priced at Under $1,000""

This would be interesting...keep in mind, you get what you pay for.

Yougang - Re: "Will this signal Dell's jump of ship to K6x for sub 1k machine OR help intel regain the low end market share by using Celeron only?"

Look for DELL to be one of the early adopters of Intel's integrated Whitney Chip set - with on-chip graphics and possibly other multimedia functions.

Coupled with low cost Celerons with on-chip L2 cache, Dell will be in the sub $1000 PC business while maintaining excellent margins.

Look for this happening in late Q2 or thereabouts.
