An online suicide example I can think of (from Steve Goldman's description) is to do a market order short sell one tick below the top on the way down in a fast market. If you get caught in the uptick rule exclusion you may look up and find yourself selling at the point you imagined closing with a buy. Ever try canceling a market order online?

Having someone confirm on the spot and "work the order" if need be can be valuable from the short seller's perspective. Sure, a market order for a long buy can be dangerous, too, but the short sale does require extra care in execution during a volatile market especially considering the extra step of borrowing the shares first. I've actually only used online trading so far, with mixed results, none tragic.

Best,
