Thought for the Day.

With DELL's imminent conversion to the sub-$1,000 model, we have an important confirmation of a trend, already embraced profitably by CPQ.

The re-emergence of many Asian manufacturers, as their economies begin to grow again, will increase competition and drive the trend towards sub-$500 models.

The arrival of the "free" PC reinforces the market for low-cost hardware.

Who will most benefit from a proliferation of low cost PCs? This is
a suggested ranking of the beneficiaries. Any comments, additions, subtractions?

1. Chipmakers/software - especially INTC and MSFT.
2. Networkers - especially CSCO and LU.
3. Telecommunications
4. Low-cost manufacturers - especially CPQ and eventually DELL.
5. Internet portals and e-commerce

CPQ has a finger in several of these pies (1) (2) (4) (5)
