<<If a compromise were to happen between now and April, it would be an all inclusive agreement. It would solve the lawsuit and get harmonizaiton on the (3G) standard.>>

This is the most provocative statement that mgmt has made to date. It reiterates the strong possibility that QCOM & ERICY will sign an OEM agreement. It also begs one question to be asked - Does ETSI exist outside of ERICY? I think we all know the answer to that one!!

Djane,

Sweden-based Ericsson says it hopes to
settle.

''We'd like to have it resolved,'' said Bo
Dimert, CEO of Ericsson's U.S. unit. ''We're
optimistic we can settle these things so we
can go ahead and continue to work on a
broadband communications system for the
future.''

Ericsson says it's not hurt much by a lack of
CDMA products. It said its 1998 wireless
phone and gear sales rose 15% to $16.2
billion.

It does not hurt ERICY's 1998's sale. However, it will for the years to come, will it not?

A compromise to recognize ERICY is also a CDMA pioneer at the same time agrees to one CDMA 2000 (use another term) chip rate standard from both parties. QCOM may have to pay one time fee to ERICY but gain the remaining royalty flow in the future.

This quote should be in bold italics!!!

"If a compromise were to happen between
now and April, it would be an all-inclusive
agreement,'' said Qualcomm President
Richard Sulpizio. ''It would solve this lawsuit
as well as get harmonization on the
(third-generation) standard."

If I could do a large font, I would do that too. This is the most important quote I have seen out of QCOM--EVER! Time for confetti, horns, champagne, etc. Maybe my enthusiasm for the stock causes me to read more into this than most, but I think this is a profound quote. Any other opinions out there?

Interesting. Marshall, Texas is near my family's home town in northeast Texas. It's a very conservative area, as well as being generally in favor of a "Buy-American" policy. I don't know if that will translate into an advantage for QCOM, but it might. On the other hand, Ericsson has offices in the Dallas area, so potential jurors may know people who work there. It will be a fascinating case to follow.

I'll be rooting for Qualcomm, and not just because I own their stock. Ericsson has a bad reputation in the communications business for shady business practices, and I think their phones are definitely the ugliest on the market.
