Announces Live Web Broadcast Of Historic Sounding Of Titanic Whistles February 20, 1999 at 4:00 ET (21:00 GMT) p.m. on titanic-online.com SAINT PAUL, Minn., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- RMS Titanic, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: SOST - news), the official guardians of the Titanic wreck site, announces that the historic sounding of Titanic's whistles on Saturday, February 20, 1999 in Saint Paul, MN at 4:00 p.m. ET will be broadcast live on RMS Titanic, Inc's. website (www.titanic-online.com). This will be the first time the whistles of the Titanic will be sounded since the great ship foundered in the North Atlantic on April 12, 1912 with the loss of more than 1,500 passengers and crew. The whistles were recovered by RMS Titanic, Inc. during its 1993 Titanic research and recovery expedition. Weighing approximately 750 pounds, these are the largest whistles ever made. The whistles, currently on display at ''Titanic -- The Exhibition'' at the Saint Paul Union Depot in Saint Paul, Minnesota, are made of cast bronze and were electronically operated from the bridge. ''This is a moment in history that we look forward to sharing with the world through the internet, and are delighted that people all over the globe will be able to witness this historical occasion by viewing our live web videocast.'' said George Tulloch, president of RMS Titanic, Inc. Mr. Tulloch added, ''It is obvious that these whistles have withstood the extreme punishment of Mother Nature in a way that offers us all the unique and historic opportunity to hear the voice of Titanic again.'' Two weeks ago, the whistles of Titanic were brought to Braun Intertec Corporation, an Eden Prairie, Minnesota based testing facility, where the whistles underwent extensive cobalt x-rays to examine the metallurgical condition of the whistles, as well as their overall structure. The whistles were then delivered for further study to The Kahlenburg Brothers Company in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, a 4th generation family owned business that has manufactured marine whistles since 1895. The RMS Titanic, Inc. live web broadcast will begin with opening ceremonies at 4:00 p.m. ET and will continue through the sounding of the whistles at approximately 5:05 p.m. ET. Officials in Saint Paul are planning a series of events from February 19th through February 21st to commemorate the blowing of Titanic's whistles. Formed in 1987, RMS Titanic, Inc. was granted salvor-in-possesion rights to the wreck of the Titanic by a United States Federal Court order in 1994, reconfirmed again in 1996. The court award includes the exclusive rights to own all of the objects recovered from the Titanic wreck site and the exclusive rights to photograph Titanic. In a June 1998 court ruling prohibiting a proposed sightseer expedition to the Titanic, United States District Court Judge J. Calvitt Clarke, Jr. commended the company for ''maximizing the wreck's historical value and returning the wreck's artifacts to society for the general use and education of all mankind.'' During 1998, 1996, 1994, 1993, and 1987, research and recovery expeditions conducted by RMS Titanic, Inc. have recovered approximately 5,000 artifacts from the Titanic wreck site.
