Flats -- That's an attention getting bit of information from Dr. Jackson. She needs to read some ZDNet stuff and quit being so concerned about the nuclear thing. I'll suggest to my friend that he see about getting a complimentary shipment of happypatches to her and her staff, asap. Probably be best to send the industrial strength version. They need to smile more, relax, and worry less. I know I sure don't want the folks overseeing the nukes being uptight and worried. Her comments about the problems in the western grid last summer brought back to mind for me the conversation I had last month with the chief operator of our local hydroplant. As I posted back then, he was very adamant about the fact that our little valley (and no, I'm not telling anyone where it is) has NO y2k concerns for power generation. He gave me a very detailed and extended explanation of the plant's workings, worst case scenarios, and backup procedures...the most extreme of which was using a portable home generator to run a battery charger to charge a couple of truck batteries to power the exciter [not exactly sure what that is, but it sounds a little kinky] to fireup the hydro plant after a complete and total shutdown. Max, absolute worst case scenario... two hours of down time. From a y2k prespective, he was more worried about folks finding out about our little sweet spot and barging in on us. BUT...he was very, very concerned about the effect which deregulation in the power generation industry has had on the way in which the grid is managed. He went into even greater detail to give specific examples of the type of non-sensical (except for maximization of short term revenues) and dangerous practices which were becoming more common place in the operation of the grid. He was truly fearful of what he referred to as * THE BIG ONE*. And, it had nothing to do with y2k, though he did allow that y2k glitches could serve as a catalyst for it. Guess I should put him on the patch list, too...eh?.
