Hi hio: Have I missed any market commentary, DELL or CPQ commentary on CNBC, this morning?

That was an interesting article you posted about EP and AV.

To summarise:

1. CPQ said through one of its executives when the potential IPO was announced that it could take about a year, perhaps later in 1999.

2. Schrock (?) said in an interview last month that he did not see why it could not be done before the end of 1999. It need not take long.

3. EP said in that interview it could be done within six months. (I don't think he would have said that unless he felt that a content provider was in the bag).

So it seems to be moving along and perhaps we are looking at a target date for readiness between July and October, 1999.

I would think the actual date of the IPO will be reserved for market timing. I would guess it will be October-November, 1999. There will be a lot of pre-publicity which will draw attention to CPQ's internet focus.

I can understand that they have to move along (a) if they are to sign up content before it finds a home elsewhere and (b) to discourage potential competitors. But one of the disadvantages of the rush will be that apart from the basic search engine and ZIP2.com, the product will not have been given time to demonstrate impressive new traffic numbers - Shopping.com might raise more question than it answers. (But an established content provider coming in might also boost the track-record). I think this potential weakness is offset by the financial muscle and added value that CPQ brings to it.
