Called Data Migration and Interface Project (DMIP), the contract involves extensive project management, innovation, excellent co- ordination and quality control, according to sources. Nearly 100 dedicated software engineers have been engaged in the project. Michelin manufactures tyres for bicycles, motorcycles, automobiles, trucks, aircraft and space shuttles. The company has a business presence in 170 countries. TCS has had to compete with Ernst and Young and International Marketing Research (IMR) to clinch the project, according to sources. The assignment involves streamlining Michelin's legacy systems using Oracle Financials and consists of pre-analysis, analysis and design, interface development (offsite) and integration (onsite). The time estimated for each stage is six months per site. It is being implemented from the offshore centre in Calcutta and co- ordinated from the four data centres at Clermon-Ferrand, France, Greenville, US, Rio De Jeneiro, Brazil and Singapore. An online e-mail-based help desk has been developed to handle on-the-job technical queries from across the globe. In DMIP, data centres will form key points in the structure with local sites being linked to them. Pre-analysis and analysis will be conducted at the local sites to determine the scope of work involved in replacing Michelin's local legacy applications with the Oracle application. Michelin's legacy systems have varied functionality and usage and run on different platforms - IBM Mainframe, VAX, PC and others.
