You might be on to something ...

but regardless of whether IBM buys NOVL as McNealy says, "It's mankind vs. Microsoft and mankind is winning."

Add SUNW, ORCL, IFMX, JAVA, Jini ... to the equation and a short term discontinuity function of the DOJ ...

but MSFT's biggest problem is a very weak product lineup. Think about it. The Windows OS is poor (it isn't stable or scalable). Microsoft Money can't compete with Quicken. They can't touch Adobe products. Netscape is cross platform. Word is bigger than Bill's tantrums.

But owning 90% of the desktop is a helluvan asset. And Excel is an excellent product. They find ways to make money. I think Bill is the perfect used car salesman. "All we do is sell innovative and great, previously owned transportation devices." Look for www.microsoftusediron.com ...

IBM will put NOTES on the Linux operating system, with NOVL as its networking system.

Linux is a variant of UNIX. Unix does not require a "networking system". Unix has the network model built in. TCP/IP, NFS, Kerberos, FTP, you name it.

I guess you could use the Network Directory Services in Linux...

Just to add some thoughts here...

I've always been a supporter of finding solutions based on the best PRODUCTS instead of one vendor. Even with my enthusiasm for Novell, I do work with many other products which goes to say that you can't be the master of all things.

If you could take the advantages of Linux + Apache web server and add that to a network managed thru NDS + ZEN/ManageWise and run that on hardware as proficient as IBMs, well that's a winning strategy. From where I sit (as a client and IT professional) it's something I dream about.

Add into that mix switch and edge devices from Lucent + Nortel and the ever brash Cisco and you could have the total internetworked experience with stability, reliability and lowest cost of ownership ever calculated.

I'd like to add that ORACLE with it's RAW IRON technology and SUNW with JAVA could even bring this complete solution to even higher levels. Let's face it, everyone has their eyes glued to Redmond like circus goers mezmerized by a high-wire act. Meanwhile, the lions, tigers and bears are rolling on to center stage.

The high wire act is fun to watch but everyone always talks about the lions, tigers and bears.
