Annika, check out the current issue of Golf Magazine which is featuring some courses in the Jacksonville, Florida area (including the famous TPC-Sawgrass). This info may be available at their website at www.golfonline.com too, but I haven't checked. Jacksonville is far north of the Doral course. I'm sorry, my only trips to the Miami area were not golf related, so I don't know a thing about the courses there.

Annika

even though I lived in the Miami burbs for nearly a year I do not know many of the courses. I played north of Miami more often than not

but, I do have one I did enjoy. Key Biscayne Golf Course. Long layout, wide fairways, med to large greens. Depending on the time of year you go the greens will either be excellent or bouncy. Tidwarf grass has a way of being stubborn.

Pro shop # is 305 361 9139

Look to spend around 70-100 bucks. Not sure what rates are now but they used to have a good twilight deal. I think it started at 2:00

I do not know where the Doral Open will be held, but if you are close to Orlando:

Check Disney World, they have at least 5 courses:

Buena Vista.

Osprey Ridge.

Eagle Pine.

Magnolia.

and..... hmmm. I forgot the fifth one.

I believe that Magnolia and Eagle have been used for some of the PGA tournaments.

I have played in all five, there are some mean "water holes"

They are long courses.... and they won't let you walk. (bummer).

There may be some programs in which you pay a $50 "Membership Fee", which gives you a discount on some of the courses.... but that limits you to play the designated course(s).

As for the West Coast....

La Costa in Carlsbad, CA (north of San Diego). They held the Mercedes Classic until 1997. (I believe you have to stay at the SPA to get in, but it does not hurt to check.

Torrey Pines in La Jolla, CA (Also North of San Diego). Public Course.... but good luck trying to get in.

Whispering Palms in Rancho Santa Fe, (near La Jolla)... semiprivate club. has 27 holes.

I can't find the telephone numbers....

Annika,

Golf in Florida this time of year is expensive. If you could explain what "not a fortune" means to to you it might help with recommendations. I can vouch for Key Biscayne and Bay Hill but they are expensive.

Try this site agpa.com
Binks Forest and Celebration are their best in the area. If you are going to play any of their courses it will be beneficial to become a member. The cost of the cheaper membership will be recovered if you play just one of their courses.

Have a good trip

Ken

Hej Annika,
There's a lot of great golf courses all over Florida. I just got back from playing the Disney courses myself. Excellent stuff! Check out:
disney.go.com and home.earthlink.net
The Disney Master Starter's phone is 1-407-WDW-GOLF (1-407-939-4653).

I don't know if it would be available in Sweden or not but a book by Robert McCord, The 479 Best Public Golf Courses In The United States, Canada, The Caribbean, and Mexico, published by Random House is a great reference. It'll tell you more than you want to know about all the best courses, if you can find it. You might also find some useful information at golfweb.com (check the "Travel" link).

If you really want to save a few bucks you should know about a company named Stand-by Golf. They sell guaranteed tee times at discounted green fees on "all the choice courses". The catch is they can only book same day or next day tee times, no advance bookings (that's how they get the discount, by brokering unused tee times).
For Orlando or Sarasota call 1-888-876-2665, Tampa is 1-813-899-2665.

If you want to see a bit more of the USA or decide Florida is a bit too hot, the Myrtle Beach area in South Carolina is another major golf area. If you head up that way, the Tidewater Golf Club is definitely worth the fee. Marsh Harbor is also supposed to be great.

By the way, the first sentence in McCord's book about Doral is: "The Doral is one of those places that you have to go to if you are serious about golf." If it's at all possible for you to get on the same course as the Open you'll be watching you really should do it. It really enhances both experiences.

Fore,
Alski

Annika, your question about golf in south Fl. was referred to me buy David J.
I don't play but I live here so made some calls The Open tickets
are from the 28th to the 8th. Doral has 5 courses and they are all booked .. sorry
but you can play Crandon ( Key Biscayne ) around that time. They take tee times up to
5 days in advance so call ahead. Prices are: $ 92.00 with cart per person and after
3 PM it drops to $32.00. The # for the Crandon 305-361-9129. The course has the bay and the Miami skyline for a backdrop complete with coconut trees, a little different than Sweden.
Remember this is our season and everywhere is busy. You might
check out www.golfweb.com they also have a lot of information.

Hope this helps
Woody
