mark, The big issue I see with video on demand is not with the set top, but with the provider. It is going to require huge amounts of
server capacity to deliver to millions of customers at any given
time. The consumer determines when to start the show. Also very large
bandwidth is required to deliver all the information at speed. ADSL
phone lines may work, but the real solution will come with fiber.
I think part of the high valuations on the internet stocks is due
to peoples vision of this video streaming / interactive solution.
I believe before it's cost effective and widespread it will be a
decade from now. Straight internet over tv is currently an inexpensive
ready to go solution. Interactive is close, but video on demand is
further out. DVD adds to the cost of the box. It would now be a
$500 box. A separate buying decision. I've one in my pc. It sucks
at best. A low cost solution instead of a good separate player. It doesn't take much to hang it up. A piece of dust, fingerprint, anything.
Also the sound is weak. Good audio comes with a price also. Just like
a good stereo. MSU is looking at a low cost solution for 3rd world
countries to at least enter the internet game. IMHO for all the above.
