Gabriel, I agree wholeheartedly with your conclusions 1-4 inclusive, but your ASP figure might be a little too high, especially if Dell enters the sub 1K market aggressively. I am expecting (though not forecasting!) a gross margin of around 22%.

I was especially impressed with Dell's comments regarding both the pipeline and more aggressive pricing. Dell's huge cost advantage should push some of its competitors back on their heels.

I also thought that we had discussed the January issue earlier, and that IDC had indicated that January was included in their report. If you recall, I doubted that because it would render market share calculations meaningless (because of non-standard time periods). I have not followed the IDC reports with attention that you had, so I simply assumed that storage was included under the umbrella of "enterprise".

Your thoughtful analysis is always appreciated.

TTFN,
CTC

Gabriel: I appreciate your assessment of the DELL earnings release. You said certain types of people learn from their mistakes and I agree. Michael Dell has proven that he is one of those people.

Here are some comments I posted on the thread recently:

...DELL is still young....Michael is committed to CONSTANT and NEVER ENDING IMPROVEMENT...I will be relaying quotes from this great new book (Direct from DELL -- Strategies That Revolutionized An Industry) on the thread....I'll leave you with one:

MD at the very end (p.227)....<<...there's no such thing as a company that executes perfectly forever. But the real key to our success comes from within. It comes from knowing our strengths and being open to experimentation. It comes from the determination to learn from our mistakes and look for ways to constantly improve.>>

Hmmm......I sure wouldn't bet against Michael and his team over the LONG TERM..

regards,

Scott

This too will pass...

I recall watching Cramer on CNBC a few months back prior to the last split when DELL was in the low $90's. Folks were complaining about why DELL wasn't moving forward fast enough.

Cramer said that DELL is one of the most 'profit taken' stocks that he had seen - that profit taking was common place for DELL - and to get back to him when DELL was at $150!

We'll it got there easily enough - then another split - up to $110 - and yet another split on Tuesday.

I liked the recent announcment that DELL will now get into the low end sub $1k computers. Good move.

I bought a Compaq computer once - one of those EISA 486 machines which the dealer said I could easily upgrade when the new Pentium chip was released. Guess what - I could upgrade by adding a new card with the Pentium chip onboard for around $2.5k!! Oh and by the way - we don't support EISA anymore.

Lesson learned - I'll never buy another Compaq again.

David.
