NEEDHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 18, 1999--

High-speed network-based solution provides video-on-demand, Internet

access, shopping, training, and real-time custom information

GTE today announced the availability of the first digital, interactive information and entertainment system capable of delivering high-speed Internet access, video-on-demand, games and real-time audio and video communication services over telephone, cable, or wireless networks.

The target markets for the system are hospitality and corporate customers as well as residential service providers.

Using either a digital set-top box or a personal computer as the controller, the GTE Intrigue(SM) system supports entertainment-on-demand, Internet access, e-commerce and other information-based services for hotels and residential service providers; and training and related communications applications for corporations.

The system is undergoing final testing in the first quarter of 1999, and the first customer deployment will be completed during May, 1999.

GTE Intrigue is also the first network-independent solution offered in the interactive information and entertainment system market supported by a complete package of end-to-end integration services, including network installation, user-interface customization and supply of content.

The system's developer, a unit of GTE Government Systems Corporation, is dedicated to being a single-source provider for all of its customers' interactive video, entertainment and information-network requirements, including hardware, software, communications networking and system installation.

"Few companies can match our capabilities in terms of the breadth and depth of expertise that customers are seeking in this complex, highly competitive marketplace," said Al Whitmore, vice president of GTE Interactive. "GTE's interactive services group was formed to meet the specific demands of the industries we serve, providing a single organization that can deliver the systems and network integration skills and video engineering capabilities required to support high-performance systems like Intrigue."

GTE anticipates that the market for interactive information and entertainment systems will surpass $6 billion by 2001. The group works with telephone, cable and wireless network service providers, as well as manufacturers of personal computers and digital set-top boxes, said Whitmore.

GTE Government Systems' work in this field began with a 1997 United Kingdom-based trial to implement interactive services to homes over a hybrid fiber-coax network. Whitmore said GTE is now working with cable operators, businesses and private network operators worldwide who are looking for a single integrator to provide either end-to-end solutions, or the necessary components to upgrade their back-end systems.
