Environmentalists Sue EPA on Genetically Altered Crops, AP Says

Bloomberg News

Washington, Feb. 18 (Bloomberg) -- A coalition of
environmentalists and organic farmers is trying to force the U.S.
government to rescind its approval of genetically altered crops
grown with Bt, a bacterial insecticide, the Associated Press
reported. Greenpeace International, the Center for Food Safety
and the International Federation of Organic Agricultural
Movements filed a lawsuit against the Environmental Protection
Agency, arguing use of the pesticide, first approved for potatoes
in 1995, will harm organic farmers' crops and change the
environment's balance, the AP said, citing a Greenpeace official.
The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court and demands the
EPA stop approving any new Bt plant crops, cancel all those that
have been approved and assess the pesticide's impact on the
environment, the news service reported.

Novartis AG, the world's biggest crop chemicals company,
today said it plans to start a weed-killing system in 2003 aimed
at stealing market share from rival Monsanto Co.'s Roundup Ready.
