THE HALL WATER REPORT...Interview GOURMET'S CHOICE INTROS BOTTLED WATER IN VIETNAM Under the direction of its new president, entrepreneur James Tilton, an Asian business expert, Gourmet's Choice Coffee Co is launching a new bottled water in Vietnam. Production of Revive will begin at a plant in the Quang Tri Province this month. The company is projecting a large gross revenue, and pretax profits of $1.3 million. A venerable coffee company that fell on hard times, under new management, Gourmet's Choice in October acquired from Intl Bev Development Corp, AmViet Development Corp, which owns 70% of AmViet Mineral Water Co, a Vietnam company licensed by the government to produce water, mineral water and other beverages in Vietnam. Amvet Development is the Monarch Beverage (seventh largest soda company in US) licensee for Vietnam. Joining Tilton will be Wayne Johnson and Robert Price. Johnson is the founder of Vivant Group Inc, which develops quality waters and value-added specialty beverages for international markets. Price spent 10 years with PepsiCo, Inc, as VP New York operations. In January 1988, Gourmet bought Nutri-Foods Co, a debt-free juice and beverage distributor located in Seattle. We talked to James Tilton about his company's move into bottled water. Subscribe Now! HWR: As you move into beverages, will you change your name from Gourmet's Choice Coffee Co? Tilton: It is one of the most recognizable names in the beverage industry, a huge company that fell into managerial difficulties until I took it over. I am going to spend a lot of effort and money building the coffee business. HWR: Why are you interested in bottled water in Vietnam? Tilton: Vietnam, a country the size of Germany, has 80 million people, with population expanding rapidly. From my experience and knowledge, the biggest need in Vietnam is clean drinking water. HWR: What's special about your source water ? Tilton: People don't realize how good the source waters in Vietnam are. Our product is excellent. We have all our licenses, are complying with all international standards and are approved by IBWA. HWR: What types of water are you planning to bottle and market? Tilton: We're starting out with your typical bottled water. Then after a very modest investment we will go on to mineral water. After that, flavored mineral water. As exclusive licensee from Monarch franchise for Vietnam, we'll also be distributing their products. HWR: What sizes of bottled water? Tilton: Right now we are producing 500ml, half-liter bottle. We'll start production of one liter bottles in the second quarter of 1999. Our distributors have committed to buying full liter bottles that should result in monthly sales of $740,000, which translates into over $8 million in revenues from the first 12 months of full liter size production. HWR: Aside from the water source, will all accessory items be locally supplied? Tilton: We purchased several million caps in the US, but everything else comes from local sources, including the PET. This saves us from import duty. HWR: Will you be branching out from Vietnam? Tilton: We are in discussions with distributorships and will be selling locally into the Laos-Cambodia, old Burma area. Monarch already has big distribution into Thailand of their flavored mineral waters, so we may be selling our bottled water into Thailand. We will probably set up a plant for mineral water in China, hopefully by next year. Vietnam will service the smaller countries in the region. Subscribe Now! HWR: What channels will you be selling through? Tilton: All channels. We have airlines, import/export companies, groceries, hotel services, retail, wholesale. HWR: Do you plan to go worldwide eventually? Tilton: Eventually, and we think that Internet sales will play a big roll in that. HWR: Might you eventually spin off the water division? Tilton: That's possible. My track record shows I do a lot of spinoffs. I might spin off the water business into a separate public entity as a dividend to our shareholders.
