Book to bill numbers for the semi-equip sector were published on Thursday and with an overall BTB of 1.10 things are continuing to look much better although there was little market reaction to this figure. Basically it appeared well anticipated. Looking through the numbers did provide some interesting trends which look particularily good for Cohu and TER. The December BTB for the front-end was .99 and back-end was .91. January saw and improvement in both with front-end being 1.11 and backend being 1.08. While relatively small it is interesting to note that the backend sector did slightly better at growing bookings as the backend grew bookings on a month to month basis by 13% and the front-end grew them by 9%.

One month changes may not be that important but hopefully this is a small sign that the back-end will begin to see sales accelerating faster than the front-end sector. With the higher yields that semi companies are achieving it would seem that this would be a natural outcome. The next few months will be interesting to follow.

If orders keep growing on a month to month basis by 10% it does not take very long to get back to the previous high orders that we saw in 1997. COHU earnings could really take off much more than any one expects in that kind of environment. Of course the 10%-13% month to month growth will have to slow down at some point.

Good luck.
