Washington Update -- It looks like Sen. McCain of Arizona, chairman of the Commerce Committee, prevailed in the tug-of-war over which Senate committee would host that body's year 2000 liability bill. McCain has already introduced S. 96, which will be revised and include provisions similar to those recommended by the NAM Coalition (soon to be know by its "official" name, the Year 2000 Coalition, which consists of 70+ industry and professional organizations).

There may be a second Commerce Comte hearing (around 2/25) at the request of committee Democrats, with witnesses from the Administration. The latter is taking the position that there is no "compelling" evidence that there will be a flood of Y2K litigation, and hence, no need for liability relief.

The tentative plan is to move S.96 to full committee mark-up on or around March 3rd. Stay tuned...

Ken
