Emulex LightPulse Fibre Channel PCI Host Bus Adapter Selected by IBM for RS/6000 Enterprise Servers

COSTA MESA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 18, 1999--Emulex Corp. (Nasdaq:EMLX), a leader in fibre channel products and technology, Thursday announced that International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) is integrating the Emulex PCI fibre channel host adapter into the IBM(R) RS/6000 S70 and S70Advanced enterprise servers.

IBM plans to begin shipping servers with the Emulex adapter card to customers on March 26 of this year.

IBM has announced plans to provide its customers with the benefits of balanced system design through advances in network bandwidth, clustering technologies and new application support. IBM plans to continue to enhance bandwidth by supporting fibre channel, utilizing fibre optic technology, for exponential performance improvements for large data applications.

"The concept of a Storage Area Network introduces new and flexible methods for managing and leveraging the enterprise value in storage," said Mike Maas, manager, IBM Server Product Management.

"Fibre Channel is a key enabling technology for IBM, and Emulex is a proven provider."

"According to International Data Corporation research, IBM is the worldwide market share leader in server revenues, and Emulex is pleased to be the supplier of choice for fibre channel adapters for the IBM RS/6000 S70 and S70Advanced servers," stated Paul Folino, chief executive officer and president of Emulex.

"Fibre channel is rapidly being accepted as the mainstream technology for enterprise server to storage connectivity. Emulex has been committed to fibre channel technology since the early 1990s and is the leading supplier of gigabit PCI fibre channel host bus adapters in the market today. The combination of IBM's server products and Emulex's fibre channel adapters provides end users with very high performance solutions for their growing data management requirements."

The LP7000E utilizes Emulex's fibre channel-optimized ASIC architecture, "Superfly," to achieve significant increases in performance over earlier generation products. In addition, the LP7000E provides one of the industry's widest sets of operating features including support for all classes of fibre channel services (1, 2, 3 and intermix) and all topologies (arbitrated loop, point-to-point and direct fabric/switch attach) which is becoming significantly more important to users as fibre channel solutions become more prevalent.

Available with the LP7000E are both SCSI and LAN protocol drivers for multiple operating environments including NT and various UNIX systems. The driver interface to the adapter is the proven, high performance Emulex "SLI2" API which, when combined with the "Superfly" architecture, 233MHz on-board processor, and dual-ported SRAMs for buffering, consistently exceeds results in throughput, distance and reliability for those large and diverse enterprise applications requiring gigabit connectivity when compared with other host adapters in the market.
